A broad, largely leaderless popular protest movement that began in February 2019 to oppose President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s bid for a fifth term and demand systemic political change and an end to corruption. The movement is characterized by weekly peaceful demonstrations across Algeria and a decentralized network of activists, groups and local committees rather than a single formal leadership.
